Course Description
This training meets the requirements of OSHA’s Powered Industrial Truck Standard 1910.178. This class does not include a forklift function drive test. This allows employers to test employees using their site-specific forklifts under conditions present in their work environment.
Note: Formal training and evaluation of the operator’s performance on a forklift (functional drive test) is required for complete certification. Summit can be contacted to facilitate on-site employer functional drive tests if needed.
Course Topics
- Operating instruction, warning, and precautions.
- Differences between the forklift and automobile.
- Forklift controls and instrumentation.
- Engine or motor operation.
- Steering, maneuvering, and visibility.
- Fork and attachment adaptation, operation, and use limitations.
- Vehicle capacity and stability.
- Vehicle inspections and maintenance.
- Refueling and/or charging and recharging of batteries.
- Operating Limitations and equipment manuals.
Workplace related topics including:
Surface conditions, compositions of loads to be carried, load stability, load manipulation, stacking, and unstacking, pedestrian traffic, restricted places, hazardous locations, ramps, areas of insufficient ventilation, and other potentially hazardous environmental conditions.
